Studio/Gallery Directions and Parking

Look for the stone cairn at the end of the driveway, 11 Hollett Street, Scituate.  Studio is located in the art gallery in the barn: right side, green door, second floor.

The area surrounding the studio is a Certified National Wildlife Habitat and a quiet zone: you may see a deer or hawk in the immediate premises...Please turn your cell phones off or to vibrate mode while you are here to maintain the aura of sanctuary for wildlife and nearby homes.  From Route 3-A in Scituate: turn on to Henry Turner Bailey Rd. towards Minot to the center of North Scituate; go through the lights, this becomes Gannett Rd. Go almost 1 mile heading towards Minot Beach; hard right onto Hollett; second drive on left.  Studio/gallery entrance is at the back right corner of the barn.  Please fill parking spaces at the front of the barn (as you face it) first; more spaces to the right side where the studio entrance is.  Please back in to the spaces to the right of the barn so you can drive out. (saves your gas, too!)

Private/Semi-private sessions in yoga and Pilates: Some times are still available; please contact Darlene. Private sessions are an opportunity for you to work on your individual needs.  Sessions can be vigorous or restorative, theraputic or meditative: all geared toward personal preference. Reasonably offered as a single session, or for a savings, as a series.

Special announcements / weather related class cancellations are posted here 1.5 hours before class.

Come and experience the benefits that Yoga practice and movement can give you:

The disciplines of Yoga, Pilates and Tai Chi strengthen your mind and your muscles, redefine your body and properly redistribute your weight.  Stretching and core strenthening techniques ease most back pain; learning proper breathing enhances your energy levels and overall vitality.  All of this will ease daily stress and increase your overall health! You simply must add it in to your daily life.

Class descriptions:

Specialty Classes:

Fit Body.  Levels 1 and II

This is an excellent class that everyone is seeing results from!  The small group setting allows for personal attention...Be stronger, more fit and toned. In this class we use 2-3lb. arm/leg weights, the Pilates Ring, Pilates mat work, and movement borrowed from dance class.  This class steps up the intensity of mat and will increase your strength and coordination. Drop-ins still allowed at this time...

Fit Body Barre.   All over body toning and stretch using a ballet barre.  We use 2-4lb. weights for upper body toning, a small ball, mat for floor work and the ballet barre for intense leg work.  This class also steps up the intensity by moving at a quicker pace.

Dynamic Body Dance.  Levels 1 and II. Darlene blends her signature moves from jazz dance with international rhythms from Indian, Latin, Rock and Hip Hop to form a class with high energy, motivating music and challenging choreography. If you are a Zumba or Jazzercise "graduate" this class is for you.  Join in anytime for creative routines that will challenge your body and your brain. :-)

Yoga Classes:

Rise+Shine Yoga: Moderate; all levels. Gentle flow class to wake up the body.

Gentle Yoga. All levels

For new students beginning a practice, those who wish to have a slower pace, recovering from injury, or pre-natal students.  The focus of class is to increase flexibility, strength and quiet your mind.  We move slower and do fewer postures in this class to bring about body awareness to reduce tension patterns and release stiffness.  Even if you are an experienced yogi you may find stillness in slowness...

AM YOGA / UNWIND PM yoga: All levels. This class offers students a chance to awaken the body in the morning, and undwind at the end of the day. Focus on proper body alignment and pranayama (breathing).   For flexibility, balance and strength! Reduce your stress, quiet your mind and rejuvenate the body.

SoulSpace Vinyasa/and "Molasses Flow":

Darlene's signature style of core-integrated Vinyasa yoga, infusing precision of alignment with strength from center. Inspiring music and graceful flows that create meditation in motion. Individuals are encouraged to practice at their own pace, using modifications to accomodate their needs.  This class is a more athletic style of yoga suited to students in good physical condition with an understanding of Surya Namaskars A+B.

Core Strength Vinyasa: flow style, core strengthening yoga/Pilates.

Other classes offered periodically:

Yoga Basics:  Beginner. Class for students brand new to yoga or who are recovering from injury or illness.

Session only, 4 weeks.

Restorative Yoga is a chance to teach and encourage the body into a state of deep relaxation doing supported postures that calm the central nervous system.   All levels.

Prenatal Yoga: All Levels.  For mothers-to-be, yoga is an ideal way to prepare for birth and labor.  It promotes fitness and flexibility, tones the pelvic area, increases circulation, helps with breath control and balances mind-body energies.  A healthy, flexible body along with a calm mind are tools you will want to call upon during labor and birth.  As always, please clear with your medical team if this a new practice for you. This class is held by session only with pre-registration.

Yin Yoga.  All levels

Yin yoga is a lesser-known form of yoga which is performed to stretch the connective tissues of the body. Primary connective tissues include the hips, thighs and lower spinal area. These types of tissues do not stretch the muscles (as in the yang form of yoga asanas) but they stretch and exercise the bone and joints areas of the body. This type of asana practice is beneficial to a wide variety of people. Yin yoga is a perfect match for yang yoga, and provides a deeper stretch. Although yin yoga is not as intense as other yang forms of yoga, its long duration of held postures can make it challening.

Pilates Fundamentals+ All levels, including beginner, or those returning from a hiatus...

We will cover the fundamentals of Pilates mat work as taught by Joseph Pilates.  You will learn alignment, proper breath techniques, and more.   After the series, you will have greater strength, and understanding of your body and your posture!

Yogilates™.  Levels 1 and II

An effective and popular combination of Yoga and Pilates, as trademarked by my teacher, Jonathan Urla, founder of Yogilates.  Class uses Pilates mat work with the breath and flow of Hatha Yoga for a full body strengthening and stretch. An understanding of Pilates basics is best for this class; we sometimes use light weights for added arm work.

Some private and semi-private session times are still available...

Private sessions in yoga or Pilates offer you a chance to work on your individual need and progress.  The sessions can range from gentle and theraputi, to vigorous and active; the intent is to meet your needs.  Please contact Darlene...781-545-0340.

The physical and mental benefits of a yoga practice can be experienced at your workplace: please contact Darlene.

The eight limbs of yoga:

Tenets for taking your yoga with you into your life.

  1. Yamas ethical precepts that transcend race, religion, time; i.e. no matter what race or sex you are, no matter what religion you practice, nor where you live in whatever time period, they still apply. They Yamas are:
    Non-violence, truthfulness, non-stealing, sexual moderation and non-possessiveness.
  2. Niyamas – practicing the qualities of purity, contentment, austerity, study of sacred texts (of any religion) and seeing the Divine in all God’s creatures.
  3. Asan or Asanas the physical postures to strengthen and balance all bodily systems and keep the body and mind free from pain, disease, and inflexibility.
  4. Pranayama breath work - the measuring, directing, and controlling of the breath, and thus of energy.
  5. Pratyaharasense withdrawal - either from attachment to external objects, or controlling the senses (what you listen to, what you allow yourself to view), or directing them in a focused manner.
  6. Dharana concentration - means “immovable concentration of the mind” and refers to techniques used to induce keen concentration, which can direct you to the seventh limb, meditation.
  7. Dhyanameditation.
  8. Samadhi state of bliss. Means “putting together, joining or combing with”; referring to the union of the contemplator with the object of contemplation. In Samadhi, we “stand inside of” our true Self in preparation for the ultimate state of classical yoga, the eternal aloneness of that Self in the purity and joy of its being.
